High Jump

HIGH JUMP

  1. The competitor can approach the bar from any angle. The maximum length of the runway is unlimited.  The minimum length of runway is 15 metres. Competitors may have a practice jump.
  2. A failure occurs when:
    1. A competitor knocks the bar from the support, even if it falls after an athlete has landed and left the mat.  This is a common misconception.  In windy conditions, the official must judge whether the wind or the athlete was responsible for the bar falling.
    2. b. An athlete takes off using both feet.
    3. A competitor runs under the bar and touches the ground or bags beyond the plane of the uprights.
    4. 3 Consecutive baulks constitutes 1 failure.
  3. Any failure counts as one of the three attempts allowed at each height.
  4. When a competitor has three consecutive failures, be they at the same height or different heights, that competitor is eliminated.
  5. Any style of jumping can be adopted (but diving over the bar is not to be encouraged).
  6. The height to be jumped must be announced at the start of any round (or height change).  It is usual for the bar to be raised in increments of 5cm until 6 or less competitors remain, then 2cm increments are recommended.
  7. A competitor who unreasonably delays making a trial is liable to have that trial disallowed and recorded as a failure.  For a second delay at any time during the competition they shall be debarred from making any further trials, but performance up to that time shall stand.  It is a matter for the Referee to decide, but 1 minute should not normally be exceeded.  The competitor must be notified by the official responsible when the period allowed for their trials has commenced.
  8. In high jump a competitor may place marks to assist them in the run-up and takeoff, and a small handkerchief or similar on the cross bar for sighting purposes may be used.
  9. If an athlete wishes to leave high jump to take part in another event, they may do so with the permission of the official in charge, but on return must re-enter the competition at the level reached during their absence.  If the event has been completed it must not be re-opened (except if allowed by the Arena Manager).
  10. The bar must not be lowered in height, except in the rare case of determining a tie.
  11. The position of the uprights must not be altered unless the referee decides that the run-up has become dangerous.  Even then, a round must first be completed.
  12. A competitor may commence jumping at any height above the commencing height and may jump at his/her discretion at any subsequent height. The effect of this rule is that a competitor  may forego his second or third jumps at a particular height (after failing the first or second time) and still jump at a subsequent height.
  13. Even after all other competitors have failed, a competitor is entitled to continue until he/she has forfeited the right to compete further.  The heights to which the bar is raised shall be decided after consulting the wishes of the competitor.
