Shot Put

SHOT PUT

The shot is put (pushed) from a 2.135m circle and must  land within a 40 degree sector.

Competitors are allowed three puts (4 in championship events) with the best put counting.

To be considered a valid shot put:

1.            The competitor may enter the circle from any direction (preferably from the rear) but must leave from the REAR HALF of the circle.

2.            Put must be commenced from a stationary position.

3.            The competitor may, during the put, stop and place the shot down in the ring and commence the attempt again, providing this occurs once only in any one put, and no other infringement has occurred.

4.            The competitor must not touch the top of the circle or the stop board or the ground outside the circle during the put with any part of their body.  They are allowed to touch the inside of the steel band and the stop board.

5.            The shot must land so the imprint is within the inner edges of the lines or tapes marking the sector.  It does not matter if the shot goes outside the sector after initial impact.

6.            After the put has been completed the shot must be carried back to the circle. (NEVER THROWN BACK)

7.            The competitor must not leave the Shot Put Ring until after the shot has landed AND he/she must only leave from a standing position.

8.            The shot shall be put from the shoulder with one hand only.  At the time the competitor takes position to commence the put, the shot shall touch, the jaw line in close proximity to the ear. The hand shall not be dropped below this position during the action of putting. The shot must not be brought behind the line of the shoulders.  NOTE: With the lighter shot used in Little Athletics it is possible to "THROW" rather than "PUT" the shot. This could gain an advantage. The position of the shot in relation to the chin therefore needs careful watching.  At the moment when the athlete begins to drive with the arm, the hand (and chin) turns slightly to the left (right hander). The shot is in exactly the same position as it has been throughout, though it will not be as close to the chin as in the earlier stage (the athlete should not be penalised on this account).

9.         Only shots supplied by the organisers of the event may be used.

10.          An athlete may not spray or spread any substance in the circle, on the hands, on the shot or on the soles of their shoes.

METHOD OF MEASUREMENTS

1. The official places the spike (with the zero end of the tape) on the imprint mark made by the Shot.

2. The tape is drawn tight and through the centre of the circle.

3. The distance is measured at the point where the tape crosses the inner edge of the ring.

4. Measurements are made to the nearest even centimetre below the distance if not an even cm.

5. Ties are broken by referring to the next best put.
